Centers of excellence concentrate multidisciplinary expertise, protocols, data and improvement around a defined condition or procedure within a hospital or network.
Definition
Centers of Excellence are organized clinical programmes recognized for specialized capability, coordinated care and systematic quality improvement in a particular disease, population, procedure or service line.
Overview
The term is not universally regulated and may be granted internally, by payers or through external accreditation. Credible evaluation requires explicit standards, patient volumes, risk-adjusted outcomes, multidisciplinary resources, research or education where relevant, and transparent referral and follow-up arrangements. Branding alone is insufficient.
