Venture-capital allocators and fund-of-funds build portfolios of managers, stages and vintages rather than selecting startups primarily through direct investment.

Definition

VC Allocators & Fund-of-Funds are investment organizations that commit capital to multiple venture funds, separately managed accounts, co-investments or related vehicles on behalf of institutions, families and other investors.

Overview

The model can expand manager access and diversification but adds a layer of fees and depends on selection skill. Evaluation should examine access to oversubscribed managers, portfolio overlap, pacing, cash-flow management, look-through exposure and the degree to which co-investment or secondary activity changes the mandate.
