Entry type: Ranking category

Field: Hedge Fund

Definition

Quantitative & Systematic Hedge Funds are hedge funds whose investment decisions are generated principally through statistical, mathematical or algorithmic models applied within a defined research and risk framework.

Overview

Strategies include statistical arbitrage, factor portfolios, systematic macro, trend following and machine-learning applications. Systematic does not mean free of human judgment: researchers choose data, objectives, constraints, validation methods and intervention rules. Model crowding and regime change can cause historically distinct signals to fail together.

Category scope

Mandate and selection

Research philosophy, data, signal horizon, markets and capacity constraints.

Portfolio and value creation

Portfolio optimization, execution, risk allocation and production engineering.

Risk and realization

Overfitting, regime change, crowding, model error, data drift and technology failure.

Typical lifecycle

  1. Mandate: define strategy, eligible instruments, liquidity, leverage and risk budget.
  2. Research: source opportunities and develop evidence on value, catalysts and downside.
  3. Diligence: test counterparties, structure, data, legal terms and operational feasibility.
  4. Construct: size exposures, diversify risks and arrange financing or hedges.
  5. Manage and realize: monitor theses, liquidity and risk while executing exits or distributions.
